This is a community site for software developers interested in implementing zeroconf, multicast dns, and dns service discovery, which Apple first introduced as Rendezvous in it's 10.2 release of OSX. From here you can find out pointers to the latest news, software releases, docs, and find helpful links to other places on the net discussing these technologies. If you have updates for dotlocal.org, or are interested in helping, jabber/email me at jer@jabber.org. While based on many old protocols such as AppleTalk, Windows Lan Manager (Samba), and so on, this family of technoliges isn't new, but what is different this time is that they are based on standard TCP/IP and DNS specifications, and being developed as a lightweight next-generation IETF standard co-operatively by Apple, Microsoft, and other large software vendors. With the popularity of wireless and widespread usage of computing technologies by less technical individuals, this family of protocols is creating a renewed opportunity for software developers to introduce new and immediately useful features. |
