Manchester United Reach Agreement to Acquire England Midfielder Mason Mount from Chelsea

According to a report from The Athletic on Thursday, Manchester United has successfully reached an agreement with Chelsea to secure the signing of midfielder Mason Mount. The deal is said to be a five-year contract. Following extensive negotiations between the two clubs, Chelsea has accepted United’s third offer, which amounts to £55 million ($69.39 million), plus an additional £5 million in add-ons.

Mason Mount, a product of Chelsea’s academy, made his debut for the club in 2017 and has since made 195 appearances across all competitions, contributing 33 goals and 37 assists. The 24-year-old midfielder, who also had loan spells at Vitesse Arnhem and Derby County, played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s recent successes, helping the club secure titles in the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. However, Mount’s performances in the last season were somewhat hindered by a pelvic injury, limiting his participation to 24 league games, where he managed to score three goals and provide two assists.

In related transfer news, Arsenal has announced the signing of German forward Kai Havertz from Chelsea on a long-term contract. While the specific transfer fee has not been disclosed, British media reports suggest that Arsenal will pay Chelsea a fee of £65 million ($82.63 million), with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons.

Havertz, who began his professional career at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, joined Chelsea in September 2020. The 24-year-old forward brings versatility and intelligence to Arsenal’s attacking lineup, as expressed by manager Mikel Arteta. Notably, Chelsea had initially acquired Havertz for a reported fee of up to £71 million, including add-ons, making him the club’s second-most expensive signing after goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
